December 2017- Small Business Saturday!

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses.

As a relatively new start up ourselves, it’s always great to hear about organisations that seek to promote and support small business, and encourage consumers to ‘buy small, buy local’.

We first heard about Small Business Saturday via social media when we were in the early stages of getting Blossom & Bow off the ground, and a quick look through their ‘small business finder’ on their website showed us that lots of other brands we know had heard about them too and were part of their online community! It means a lot to us to be in such good company, and with loads of resources and opportunities available to us by being part of this business community, it has really given us motivation and inspiration to keep building our brand!

Local to Us....

This year more than ever, we are getting organised with our Christmas shopping and we will definitely be buying local. The key (for us anyway) is to spread out the gift buying as much as possible so that a last-minute dash round the big players on the high street isn’t necessary! (we've all done it...)

Yesterday evening, we visited a festive shopping event at a nearby independent shopping centre and farm- Burwash Manor, to gather items together for home made hampers for grandparents, and today is the Mill Road Winter Fair-a very popular event in the Cambridge calendar. Both places showcase all the best small businesses that Cambridge has to offer and are an opportunity not only to buy local- but to meet the producers, business owners, artists and foodies who are behind the brands. It’s great to see such a thriving community on our door step!

Holly & Co….

A go-to place for us at the moment is Holly & Co- an amazing website set up by one of the founders of Not on the High Street that provides inspiration and advice for small business owners. This Christmas, Holly & Co is spearheading the movement, #campaignshopsmall: an initiative that will shout from the rooftops about the fact we should all be shopping independent, and supporting the incredible small businesses in our communities.

Holly & Co run a ‘pharmacy’ for small businesses as well as offering a consultancy service. They also sell a range of beautiful items in their shop which celebrate the amazing variety of hand made and crafted, independent and niche items on the market.

As we fall head first into December and festive fever hits us, we look forward to throwing ourselves into our Christmas shopping with the #campaignshopsmall mantra in our ears…!

Happy Shopping!

December 2017 - Festive season birthday parties!

When my second child was almost due, I was desperate for her to be early to avoid having a Christmas Day baby. She was due on 20th December, but I was convinced she would be born on Christmas Day in a hospital with a skeleton staff, and spend the rest of her life having her birthday overshadowed by Jesus’s.

Obviously, everyone gets a bit dramatic in the third trimester, and of course hospital staff don’t just up and leave for their Christmas hols; but being a Christmas baby can be a bit annoying, especially when people get you just one present for Christmas and your birthday…SELFISH! As it turned out, baby number two was born on the 19th December, and will now spend the rest of eternity sharing her birthday with the office party – it’s pretty much always on the 19th right?!

Anyway, having a birthday in the festive season does have its perks. People are excited, looking forward with great anticipation to the festivities, and on the whole feeling pretty generous (better presents than in January that’s fo sho!)

You can ride that wave of pre-Christmas sparkle that everyone loves, and claim some of it for yourself.

For birthdays 1 and 2 we had ‘Christmas drinks’ for close friends and family – because babies love Christmas drinks right? Plenty of booze for mummy and daddy, lots of balloons, made an effort with the decorations, and everyone had a great time – as this photo will prove:

So it seems only fair that for her 3rd Birthday, the focus will be more on her, rather than the mulled wine. But this is not to say that I will be shunning the festive mood and pretending Christmas isn’t happening; quite the opposite. I will be embracing every snowflake, icicle and scrap of tinsel to create a winter wonderland at home!

To create this look I will be using our Winter Wonderland party box which comes with blue snowstorm plates and cups, silver glitter crowns, an icicle-like tassel garland, snow white tablecloth, plenty of icy balloons and much more. I will be embellishing this set up with fairy lights, spray on snow for the windows, and paper streamers.

Party games will take on a festive twist – I’m thinking pass the parcel in festive paper with chocolate coins between the layers and pin the red nose on Rudolph. My sister Rachel will be roped in to do festive face painting, and we will have a mini disco with Christmas songs to tire the little darlings out. The food will continue on this festive theme, and I will attempt (time permitting!) reindeer cake pops; snowflake cookies; pigs in blankets - I might even do mini Christmas dinners – AMBITIOUS!

October 2017- Susie Verrill, My Milo and Me

Earlier this month we were lucky enough to supply the lovely Susie Verrill with our Jurassic Party Box for her son Milo's 3rd birthday. Susie's parenting and lifestyle blog 'My Milo and Me' recounts her life with her son Milo and new baby Rex and includes loads of fun tips for life with small kids. Susie set up her blog after she became a new mum and says herself that "Maybe I could represent the mums who can’t sew, who love their babies to the point of exhaustion but still don’t enjoy feeling very much exhausted, those of us who mumble ‘oh sh*t’ under our breath at least 23 times a day and then we could all have a chinwag over social media about our experiences/what we’re loving/what we’re not loving  and feel a little less like our only option is to eat digestives at a mother & baby group and listen to others moan about the messy kid in the ball pit".

Susie said Milo's party was a great success and it's always great to see our gorgeous partyware in action! Thank you Susie!

October 2017- Prams and Prosecco Luxury Mum and Baby Event, Tamburlaine Cambridge

Prams and Prosecco is a brand new club for new mums who want to meet other parents and maintain an element of luxury in their mother and baby activities. We had a fab time attending their latest event at the stylish Tamburlaine Hotel in central Cambridge, where we were treated to brunch and prosecco, a hand massages by Molton Brown, and best of all- a talk by Steph Douglas, founder of Don't Buy Her Flowers. It was great to meet the ladies from Prams and Prosecco as well as Steph herself! We had recently supplied Steph with one of our party boxes so it was great to hear from her first hand how much she had loved it!
